Now that you’re thinking about hiring a catering…a huge doubt appears: should you include alcoholic beverages in your booth?
Well, first of all it really depends on…

… the country!

Conventional wisdom tells us that a glass of champagne or some good quality wine always gives a good impression… However, this statement can be false, depending on where you’re standing. Drinking is regulated in accordance with the fundamental themes of a given culture, so that cross-cultural variation in drinking practices ranges from total prohibition to a nice beer early in the morning, before work,

If you’re wondering whether or not to add some booze to your booth, you should get informed about the drinking culture of the country you’re visiting… And of course, the venue rules!

For example, in South Africa, alcoholic beverages are allowed to be served in the booths and there is no formal process to follow to serve alcohol. Nevertheless, the muslim visitors will frown on alcohol consumption, so you should always have other options. In Russia, smoking and drinking alcohol are not allowed on the show floor during setup. In Canada, serving alcohol in your booth is generally not permitted. In the UAE, you should avoid serving any alcohol at trade shows or public events. The UAE is generally a tolerant society, and therefore alcohol is available for consumption in restaurants and nightclubs… however, you will definitely make a better impression if you present an interesting collection of exotic teas.

On the other hand, in Europe (specially in countries like Belgium, Romania or Spain) it is quite common to serve alcohol, just like in Mexico. In Finland, it is permitted but the prices are very - VERY - high.

As you can see, it really depends… If you want to please everyone (and if the venues allows you to do so!), having some good wine and nonalcoholic beverages (like tea and juices) is obviously the most reasonable option.

If alcohol is YES, then…

… our advice is to give out the best quality alcohol you can afford at events. And if you must serve it in plastic containers (for safety reasons), at least use plastic champagne flutes or glasses, and NOT the kind of cups used at kid’s parties.
If you can, hire a professional bartender, as they are trained to portion drinks appropriately. That said, don’t forget to limit the number of drinks allowed.

Spirits… a good idea?

Not really. Spirits are not intended for business events, as they are too strong. Besides, they are quite expensive. You can opt for a nice local wine or craft beer, which will also make a great impression without leaving you with empty pockets.

Don’t drink on an empty stomach…

Having food is very important. A few appetisers will ensure people are not drinking on an empty stomach (we all know how dangerous that is…).Small stylish bites to eat are also another way to show you are a professional company, eager to pamper its guests. Bagels, baked chips, crab puffs, small muffins and a cheese table always works!

Plan B! Alcohol free delicious drinks

If you don’t want (or can’t have) alcohol on your booth, go creative! How about some colorful smoothies with your corporate colours? Or perhaps some herbal teas in a nice reusable clear plastic cups with your logo printed on it?

No matter what you decide, just don’t forget: always have plenty of water.
